After 7, February 1974 Grenada put to use a modified version of the Westminister parliamentry system. Sir Eic Gairy the former Governor General as was appointed after independence in 1974 won the re-election in 1976. He was overthrown in 1979 by a revolutionary movement called the New Jewle Moevement.

The date was March 13, 1979 when the New Jewel Movement decideded to make their move on the Gairy regime. He was out of state and the country was in a vulnerable enough state to cease control. The People's Revolutionary Government was the name that they gave and at that time the head was Maurice Bishop who was given the post of Prime Minister. They were in bed with several other communist naion in the Caribbean. Under the rule of the People's Revolutionary Government no elections were held.

A second coup rook place due to an internal power struggle which led to the house arrest of Prime Minister Maurice Bishop. Island wide demonstractions let to the subsequent release of Maurice Bishop . He was then recapture and executed with seven of his loyal collegues.

Another coup took place under the control of Hudson Austin forming a military governemetn to lead the country. Under his power a four day curfew was imposed on the country and the penatly was instant execution.

This lead to now famous Grenada invasion led by OECS heads of government with the asssitance of the United States. The country was then returned to a democractic way of electing a goverment.
